Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Dean Henderson deserves his opportunity after handing the goalkeeper his Champions League debut for Manchester United’s clash against İstanbul Basaksehir.

The 23-year-old returned from two impressive seasons on loan at Sheffield United this summer to challenge David De Gea to become first choice.

The Spaniard has had a disappointing 18 months but Henderson’s arrival appears to have helped De Gea, providing him with the competition he needs to improve his performances.

Henderson has therefore had to settle for two appearances in the Carabao Cup but he’s been rewarded for his patience with a start tonight in the Champions League in Turkey.

‘He’s ready,’ Solskjaer told MUTV.

‘He’s trained really well and he’s played really well in the games he’s played. He’s progressed and matured in recent months.’

United have made a dismal start to the season but they’ve conceded just three times since their 6-1 defeat to Tottenham.

Two of those goals were own goals from Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial, while the third was a penalty from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Solskjaer has selected the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay in recent matches to protect the back four but that has stunted the side’s attacking play.
