Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Manchester United centre-back Victor Lindelof is suffering a back injury, which is why he didn’t feature in the defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils turned in a really poor performance in Turkey as they were beaten 2-1 and fell to their second defeat in four days after a loss to Arsenal on Sunday.

Youngster Axel Tuanzebe started the match at centre-back alongside Harry Maguire but was substituted at half-time after struggling over the first 45 minutes.

Lindelof was on the bench, but instead of the Swede, Scott McTominay came on at the break and Nemanja Matic dropped from midfield into defence.

The change couldn’t change United’s fortunes as the second half ebbed away and Solskjaer explained at the end of the match that Lindelof would have been brought on were it not for an ongoing back problem.

‘We decided to make a few changes,’ Solskjaer said of his selections after the match. ‘Nothing especially different to what we’ve always done tactically.

‘We just didn’t perform. I think these players have played loads of games together, it was just maybe Donny [van de Beek] was the new addition.

‘Victor has got a bad back so he couldn’t play and Axel stepped in’

Tuanzebe was not injured when he went off at half-time, with Solskjaer admitting that the 22-year-old was something of a liability at the back in the second half after picking up a booking before the break.

‘Well, it’s a yellow card here,’ said the manager. ‘We needed to go for it and gamble to go forward, so the yellow card made my decision there.’
