Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended Jesse Lingard after the midfielder received criticism from Manchester United supporters over his performances this season.

Lingard has started in all three of United’s Premier League games so far but has struggled to make an impact.

United suffered their first defeat of the campaign on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace.

Lingard was substituted after just 56 minutes against Palace and was replaced by Mason Greenwood.

But Solskjaer insists the 26-year-old remains a vital part of his plans.

Asked if has an issue with Lingard after the loss to Palace, Solskjaer replied: ‘No, we stick together.

‘Jesse has not scored any goals in our last three games, no.

‘But he’s been a big part of our team and he’ll keep continuing to be an important part.

‘The energy he gives us, he’s lively.

‘But we felt Mason had to come on and create something and we’ll see Mason more often, definitely.’
