Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says he is prepared to play Donny van be Beek in a two-man midfield ahead of Manchester United’s clash with Newcastle United.

Van de Beek has struggled to force his way into the United first-team since his arrival from Ajax in the summer of 2020 and did not feature in the three opening games of the new season.

In a recent in interview with Rio Ferdinand’s Vibe With Five, the Dutchman said he was convinced he could thrive in a deeper midfield role, a position United have issues with despite their impressive summer transfer window.

‘Yes, yes. I like to play as an eight or six, it’s fine,’ van de Beek said.

‘They [United] know me because at Ajax I was playing No10 a lot but I can also play as a No8 or six. I just want to play, it doesn’t matter where.’

And in an interview with Beyond the Pitch, Solskjaer suggested he is ready to hand van de Beek the midfield role he craves.

‘Donny has very good qualities,’ he said. ‘He’s had a disappointing season last year, a disappointing end when he got his injury and stopped him playing for Holland at the Euros.

‘He has worked really hard. He’s waiting to be unleashed and to show what he can do. He can play as a six in a (midfield) two, he can play as an eight as an attacking midfielder, as a 10, we have used him on the wide left coming inside.

‘He is a footballer with many qualities that we like at the club but yes, he can play as one of the two in midfield.’

With midfield options limited for the visit of Steve Bruce’s side, van de Beek could get his opportunity this weekend.

United are set to be without Fred, who is one of eight Brazilians set to miss this weekend’s Premier League fixtures after not returning to his homeland for international duty.

Scott McTominay meanwhile underwent groin surgery during the international break.
