Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘got his subs right’ in Manchester United’s dramatic win over Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday night, believes Owen Hargreaves, who has hailed the impact of the substitutes at Old Trafford.

After falling behind to a Paco Alcacer goal on 53 minutes, United equalised just seven minutes later through Alex Telles and looked to be heading for a draw.

Cristiano Ronaldo had other ideas, though, as he scored in stoppage time to secure a crucial victory and send the Old Trafford crowd wild.

Ronaldo started the game, but it was two subs who were crucial in the build-up to the game, with Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard adding serious impetus to the attack and Lingard providing the vital touch to set-up the winning goal.

Hargreaves was impressed with the impact Cavani and Linard had, and also feels Solskjaer deserves praise for introducing them when he did.

‘The way they lost to Young Boys [two weeks ago], it was so important that they got a result and it didn’t look like they were going to get one,’ Hargreaves said on BT Sport. ‘Villarreal arguably deserved something from the game.

‘When you have payers like Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Jesse lingard that came on and really affected the game.

‘Ole Gunnar got his subs right today, brought on players that could affect the game.

‘They pushed forward, the energy was there, the crowd was up for it and Cristiano Ronaldo rises to the occasion.

‘The energy that came from Cavani was so important, the crowd could feel it.’

Another former United player, Michael Owen, agreed with Hargreaves, saying that Manchester United looked increasingly likely to win thanks to the arrivals from the bench.

‘I thought the subs brought so much energy to the game,’ said Owen. ‘Cavani and Jesse Lingard, I was surprised Jesse Lingard wasn’t the first sub, he’s absolutely flying at the moment.

‘I was really impressed with the energy the longer the game went.’
