Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Mason Greenwood could have a future as a no.10 at Old Trafford.

The scintillating teenager has mainly been used as a right winger this term and though he’s managed just four goals in all competitions, his form in recent weeks has earned praise from Solskjaer.

Greenwood has mainly been deployed from the right even if many at the club feel his best position is through the middle.

United want to give Greenwood time to understand different positions and they do not feel he is quite ready yet to play centrally, where strikers are tasked with playing with their back to goal more often.

Greenwood signed a new five-year deal at the club this week and he was tasked with speaking to the media before Thursday’s Europa League clash against Real Sociedad.

The teenager insisted he can play anywhere across the front and is simply happy to be picked.

‘I don’t mind [where I play],’ said Greenwood.

‘I could play anywhere across the front three. I can play on the right, up front and even sometimes on the left.

‘For me, it’s just about adapting into any position I go in. If it’s up front or on the right, I don’t really mind, really. I’ll take it as they come.’

However, Solskjaer was quick to point out to the ‘modest’ Greenwood that he is also capable of playing in attacking midfield behind a front three.

‘Mason was a bit shy there because he can play No.10, as well as a shadow striker,’ said Solskjaer.

‘He can play right, centre forward, 10 and, at a stretch, maybe on the left. We just have to give him time to find his final position.

‘He’s a forward who moves really well along the line at the moment at his age and at his development.

‘Physically, sometimes you don’t want to be right up in the mix and in the middle with the big brutal centre-backs next to you. So I think we’ve found that he can play both really.’

Greenwood is set to start against Real Sociedad on Thursday as United are without Edinson Cavani and have an injury worry over Anthony Martial.

Donny van de Beek has not travelled with the squad as he has a muscular injury, while Solskjaer will make a late call on Scott McTominay.

Juan Mata is back in the squad after his absence in recent weeks.
