Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful of having a final answer over Edinson Cavani’s future at Manchester United by the end of the week.

Cavani’s current contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of June but United have the option to extend that deal by a further year – if both club and player can come to an agreement.

The Uruguayan has been in sensational form during the season run-in, scoring seven goals in his last six games, including four across the two legs of the Europa League semi-final victory over Roma.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Sunday’s clash with Aston Villa, Solskjaer insisted there is no time limit on agreeing a new deal with the 34-year-old, with the manager hopeful of delivering more positive news after their game at Villa Park.

‘We don’t have a time limit, but the more goals he scores, the better we become as a team and the bigger the chance is that he’ll want to have this feeling again,’ Solskjaer said.

‘So let’s just talk after Sunday again, hopefully. Maybe he’s decided.’

Cavani has provided a superb focal point to United’s attack this season with his on-field relationship with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes blossoming in recent months.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star was thought to be set on leaving the club to return to South America this summer, with Argentine giants Boca Juniors ready to offer him a deal.

But United have been encouraged in recent weeks and remain hopeful he will sign on for another year.

‘We’ve had some good chats lately and even though the decision is still in his court, I’m still hopeful,’ said Solskjaer earlier this week.

‘Maybe even more so when you saw him on Thursday against Rome, and telling him ‘when you do that in front of the Stretford End, that’s magic’.

‘So I’m still hopeful, yeah’.
