Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says his side are only starting to ‘learn’ how to play with Edinson Cavani and he’s hopeful that the relationship will grow even further next season.

The Red Devils all but confirmed a top-four finish with a 3-1 win against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

United fell behind in the first half but they responded with goals from Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and a late header from Cavani.

The 34-year-old had intimated to the club around six weeks ago that he wanted to return to south America and would not be taking up an option to extend his deal at Old Trafford by 12 months.

However, his form has been sensational in recent weeks and Solskjaer has been using the lure of playing in front of a packed Stretford End in an attempt to convince Cavani to extend his contract.

And, speaking after the win at Villa Park, Solskjaer let out a wry smile as he said he hopes to be able to select Cavani next season.

‘Yeah his movement and his desire to score goals [is there],’ said Solskjaer.

‘It was a great cross from Marcus. We’re getting to learn Edinson as well and hopefully we can get to use him more next season.’

United have just over 48 hours to prepare for the visit of Leicester to Old Trafford.

The Foxes’ top four hopes are under threat after their 4-2 defeat to Newcastle and Chelsea leapfrogged Brendan Rodgers’ side into third with a shock 2-1 win against Manchester City on Saturday night.

Cavani is likely to start against the Foxes, though Solskjaer will have to manage his squad as they face Liverpool on Thursday.
