The figure is nearly double what was predicted, and the second quarter in a row the number has shot up.

The employment rate is still at its highest level since records began in 1971 – and earnings are level on around 3.2 per cent for pay and bonuses.

76.3 per cent of the working-age population are now in work, the figures revealed.

ONS head of labour market and households, David Freeman, said: “While pay growth has eased since last summer, with inflation remaining subdued, earnings are continuing to increase in real terms.”

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sajid Javid, said today: “Another month of record employment, making a real difference to the day-to-day lives of hard-working families.

“But we want to do even more to help with the cost of living. That’s why we’re cutting National Insurance for 31 million people and increasing the National Living Wage by a record amount from April 2020.”

MPs praised the latest figures ahead of our EU exit at the end of the month.

Tory MP Andrea Jenkyns said: “Great news that unemployment is down again!

“Here in #Morley & #Outwood we have seen a fantastic 46% reduction in unemployment since 2010, helping people achieve their goals & provide for their families.”

Mims Davies added: “?Great news again on jobs? – more people are in work than ever before – importantly in the last decade over 80% of the growth in employment is people working in higher skilled roles – UK ?? PLC is truly benefiting from a highly skilled, agile workforce ✅ “

It comes after the UK’s housing market saw an upturn after the election result, as buyers enjoyed more certainty on Brexit and politics.

Prices picked up for the first time in seven months in the New Year, it was revealed this week.
