Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lamented his Manchester United side’s display in their Carabao Cup semi-final exit at the hands of local rivals Manchester City on Wednesday night.

Goals from John Stones and Fernandinho sealed a 2-0 win for City in a game Pep Guardiola’s side thoroughly deserved to win.

United were guilty of poor defending from set-plays as John Stones converted with his thigh from Phil Foden’s free-kick early in the second half to put City 1-0 up.

Then in the 83rd minute, neither Anthony Martial nor Aaron Wan-Bissaka could properly clear Kevin De Bruyne’s corner as the ball fell to Fernandinho outside the box to volley home and put City through to April’s final against Tottenham.

The Red Devils lacked cutting edge in attack despite some bright moments early on, and speaking to Sky Sports after the match at Old Trafford, Solskjaer expressed his frustration over his side’s performance.

He said: ‘City can score many great goals and you can accept that but when you concede two set-plays, simple ones that we should’ve cleared, you’re very disappointed and of course, just not good enough in those moments.

‘We didn’t create enough big chances ourselves, they didn’t create too many big ones either but we just didn’t have the extra finesse that we’ve had in the games lately in the league, tight games that we’ve won.

‘We weren’t good enough today.

‘We played against a very good Man City team, definitely, they played well, and when they play well, you have to play really well to beat them and that’s just the reality where we’re at.’

Solskjaer suffered his fourth successive semi-final loss as United boss, but the Norwegian insisted his side don’t have a mentality problem when it comes to their inability to reach finals.

‘We’re getting closer, this is a much better version of Man United compared to a year ago in those semis and that’s positive, but it’s not enough,’ he added.

‘It’s not psychological. Sometimes you meet good teams in the semis. We met, at the moment, City are probably the best team in England.’
