'No interest to declare' – 5 times Boris Johnson dodged questions over Arcuri

Boris Johnson appears to have never explicitly denied having an affair with US tech entrepreneur Jennifer Arcuri.

But he did claim in September 2019 that there was “no interest to declare” from their long association.

That will undoubtedly lead to questions now that Ms Arcuri, 35, has told the Sunday Mirror they had a four-year affair.

During that time she won taxpayers’ cash and attended trade delegations – things she insists were legitimate due to her business interests.

But the thorny question of whether she claimed to have slept with the future Prime Minister was never quite resolved until now.

In a world exclusive interview, she said the first time they had sex was hours before the London Paralympics opening ceremony – with the mayor hunting her Shoreditch flat for a wayward sock before sitting next to his then-wife and Princess Anne.

She also claimed he encouraged her to send racy photos while on a taxpayer-funded trade trip to Israel.

Boris Johnson, 56, was asked repeatedly at the time about the nature of their relationship and refused to say.

Now he could be forced to appear in front of an official committee to answer questions on his relationship.

The Greater London Authority’s oversight committee will resume its inquiry into the affair after the local elections in May.

It could consider whether the then-mayor should have declared their relationship to avoid any potential conflict of interest.

So what did Boris Johnson say at the time their links first emerged? These quotes are rather illuminating in hindsight…

23 September 2019

After his links to Jennifer Arcuri are published in the Sunday Times, the Prime Minister is questioned by journalists on a flight to New York – and refuses six times to address the claims. Asked directly if he was in a sexual relationship with Ms Arcuri, he replies: “I am, if you’ll forgive me, going to talk exclusively about what we’re doing here at the UN.”

Later the same day, the Prime Minister tells the BBC: “All I can say is I am very proud of what we did as Mayor of London… particularly banging the drum for our city and country around the world… I can tell you that absolutely everything was done entirely in the proper way.”

25 September 2019

Asked directly what his relationship with Jennifer Arcuri was, he refuses to say, instead telling Sky News: “I can tell you that everything we did to promote London and the interests of London was done completely in the normal way and with utter propriety.”

29 September 2019

The Prime Minister claims there was “no interest to declare” when asked if he declared an interest due to his relationship with Ms Arcuri. He tells the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show: “Everything was done in accordance with the code that you have just recited.”

7 October 2019

After Jennifer Arcuri refuses to deny an intimate relationship, Mr Johnson is asked again if he broke the code of conduct. He tells reporters: “No and I’ve said, I think, everything I’m going to say on that matter. I’ve said everything I’m going to say on that particular subject.”
