Nissan responds to battery plant reports

Car manufacturer Nissan has responded to reports that is looking at the possibility of building an electric vehicle battery plant in the North East.

According to the FT, the factory would be built on Nissan’s existing Sunderland site.

Nissan said it did not have any plans to unveil currently.

A Nissan spokesperson said: “Having established EV and battery production in the UK in 2013 for the Nissan LEAF, our Sunderland plant has played a pioneering role in developing the electric vehicle market.

“As previously announced, we will continue to electrify our line-up as part of our global journey towards carbon neutrality, however we have no further plans to announce at this time.”

Nissan has been producing cars in Sunderland since 1986.
