Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari will leave the country and head for London later on Tuesday for a “routine medical check-up” his spokesman Garba Shehu said.
Buhari is expected to first have a meeting with security chiefs first before he embarks on his journey.
“He is due back in the country during the second week of April, 2021,” Shehu said.
The 78-year-old has previously visited London on a number of occasions for checkups between May 2016, when he was first elected, and 2017 for an undisclosed illness.
Despite such visits triggering speculation about his health and ability to run Africa’s largest economy and most populous nation, Buhari won a second term in office last year.
The state of health of the president is a sensitive subject in the West African nation after former leader Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, died in 2010 and it emerged that his illness had been kept secret for months.
