Nigel Farage explains EU on brink of caving to Boris Johnson's backstop demands

The leader of the Brexit Party said the EU’s chief negotiators don’t have any emotional attachment to the backstop and are happy to look into alternative arrangements. His comments come as Mr Johnson must bring a deal to Parliament by the deadline or face Remain MPs forcing him to request a three-month extension from the EU. But the EU can overrule this law and force the UK to leave by October 31, Mr Johnson’s Brexit pledge.

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Farage said: “I think what is more significant is what is going on with the negotiations around the backstop.

“Today we’ve been hearing here in Strasbourg from Juncker and Barnier, they have no emotional attachment as such to the backstop.

“They’re happy to look at alternative arrangements.

“It’s a very, very different kind of language to what we were seeing before the summer recess.

“I think we’re potentially very close to a deal being done on October 17 between Boris Johnson and Barnier.”

Mr Farage added he doesn’t believe the Prime Minister will suspend Parliament again and defended his right to do so.

He said: “I don’t think Boris Johnson will prorogue Parliament for a second time.

“The word prorogation has been misused what’s happened here with the Queen’s Speech is a very normal thing.

But the Prime Minister has said securing a deal is his top priority but as continued to stick to his “do or die” pledge that the UK will leave on October 31 with or without a deal.

He told the BBC: “I see no point whatever in staying on in the EU beyond 31 October and we’re going to come out.

“And actually that is what our friends and partners in the EU would like too. And I think that they’ve had a bellyful of all this stuff.

“You know they want to develop a new relationship with the UK. They’re fed up with these endless negotiations, endless delays. They’ve now delayed twice before to achieve what is completely unclear to me.”
