One NieR: Automata player, through reverse engineering, has found the game’s final secret over three years after its release.

Aside from being a fantastic action role-playing game, 2017’s NieR: Automata is chock full of little secrets for players to discover.

Turns out, even after nearly four years, not all these secrets had been found until recently, as one player reports finding a hidden cheat code that lets you skip right to the very end of the game.

YouTuber Lance McDonald explains that, through reverse engineering, he spotted a string of code which wasn’t being used in the game, listed as CheatCommandManager.

After some more digging, McDonald was able to uncover the cheat code and how to trigger it, which he details in his video.

As the video concerns NieR: Automata’s ending, be warned that the video does contain some spoilers.

The code requires a very specific set of circumstances to work. Firstly, it can only be activated during the opening prologue, after the cut scene that plays once you beat the first boss.

After the scene finishes, player character 2B must go stand in a certain spot in between some barrels, where you can then input the code.

Doing this takes you to the final ending’s post-credit scene and unlocks the Chapter Select, Debug Mode, the Debug Room, and the Trophy Shop.

When McDonald initially shared his findings on Twitter, director Yoko Taro himself retweeted him, simply writing ‘Three years 10 months,’ which is the amount of time it has been since NieR: Automata originally released.

The NieR Japan account also acknowledged it, writing ‘It seems that the last secret has been discovered.’

NieR: Automata is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
