Granit Xhaka has been impressed by Arsenal club-record signing Nicolas Pepe’s performances in his changed position on the left wing.

The 25-year-old has struggled for consistency since arriving from Lille in 2019 for £72million but found a new lease of life after switching to the opposite flank in recent weeks.

Pepe has started three of his last five games in the Premier League on the left and scored twice in those matches – against Southampton and Wolves.

When asked about the impact the Ivory Coast international has had in his new position, Xhaka replied: ‘Pepe is very important for us. He has a lot of quality. Last few weeks he played more on the left, he looks very good on the left if I’m being honest because I’ve only seen him on the right.

‘But it’s important to know the players who can play in both positions.

‘He made the difference in the last few weeks, the Southampton game where he scored.

‘If you have players like him who are very fast and can run behind with Cedric or Kieran on the left, they like to have the ball on their feet. You have two options open and that’s very good for me.’

Explaining his decision to move Pepe to the left after Arsenal’s 3-1 over Southampton, Arteta said: ‘We believed we could exploit some spaces there and he could be really efficient to do that.

‘The way he had been training he deserved his chance and today he did his job really well.

‘He was really good again. He created big moments. He deserved his chance today and he took it.’
