Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has fired back at a podcast host who fat-shamed her following her appearance at the Golden Globes Awards 2021.
The Irish actress, 34, was called ‘the fat girl from Bridgerton’ in a tweet made by Amanda Richards, which was posted on Monday.
She publicly wrote: “The fat girl from Bridgerton is wearing a black cardigan at the Golden Globes.”
Amanda added: “Bc no matter how hot and stylish you are, if you’re a fat girl there will always be a black cardigan you think about wearing, then decide against, but ultimately wear bc you feel like you have to. [sic]”
Nicola was less than impressed as she responded to the unexpected comment.
She penned back: “I thought the cardigan looked ace, Molly Goddard used them on her runway with the dresses that’s where the idea came from.”
“Also I have a name,” Nicola fumed.
Backing their favourite Derry Girl star up, Nicola’s fans defended her outfit choice and credited her ‘amazing’ style.
One angry fan wrote: “All she did was call attention to how beautifully you were dressed and how gorgeous are from head to toe.”
Another commented: “What a rude comment to make! How can we ever expect men to stop marginalizing women based on looks if women do it too? Use her name!”
And a third argued: “Nicola has amazing style. She isn’t scared of showing her body. I think this was choice rather than a cover up.”
After seeing their point, Amanda replied: “Agree, her style is killer. and it was a choice! She replied and said so, and correctly called me out for not using her name. I definitely projected my own feelings about the requisite fat girl cover up cardigan onto that look.”
However Amanda is yet to respond directly to Nicola, or even issue an apology.
Nicola looked stunning at Sunday’s award ceremony as she wore a yellow tulle dress, which she paired with a gorgeous black cardigan.
The TV star finished off her look with a bold makeup look and funky hair clips.
