In the three years that have followed, he has won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and now the World Cup after France’s 4-2 win over Croatia.

Kante has enjoyed an excellent tournament in Russia and is now regarded by many as the finest holding midfielder in the world – but there is no sign of him getting carried away.

As France’s players rightfully celebrated in the rain at the Luzhniki Stadium, a shy Kante once again took a back seat.
