Former Barcelona stars Neymar and Dani Alves have hit out at the club over their treatment of Luis Suarez following the striker’s move to Atletico Madrid.

Suarez, 33, has joined La Liga rivals Atleti on a free transfer after Barcelona agreed to terminate his contract a year early, with Ronald Koeman making it clear the Uruguayan did not fit with his plans for the new campaign.

It’s been a turbulent summer at the Camp Nou in the wake of the side’s disappointing 2019/20 season, which ended with no silverware and Quique Setien’s subsequent dismissal.

Messi, who himself threatened to leave after a public falling out with president Josep Maria Bartomeu, took aim at the club for their handling of the situation in an emotional farewell message to Suarez on Friday morning.

The Argentine said: ‘You deserve to leave like the man you are: one of the most important players in the club’s history, achieving important things both as a group and individually. And not to get kicked out like they did to you.

‘But the truth is that at this point nothing surprises me.

‘I wish you all the best in this new challenge. I love you very much, I love you very much. See you soon friend.’

Brazilian duo Neymar and Alves – who have both made their way out of Barcelona in recent seasons – were quick to respond to Messi’s Instagram post and joined the forward in criticising the club for the way they have handled Suarez’s acrimonious exit.

Neymar said: ‘It’s incredible how they do things 🤦‍♂️.’

A short while later, Alves replied: ‘Unfortunately, this is the truth we have known for a long time.

‘This is confirmed more and more with each year.

‘It’s not about wins and losses, we know that too well, this is about respect, and they don’t know that.’

Suarez had to wipe away the tears in an emotional farewell press conference this week

Suarez couldn’t resist taking a swipe at president Bartomeu as he said his goodbyes in his official farewell press conference on Thursday.

It came after Bartomeu tried to block Suarez joining a direct rival in Atleti. The Spaniard had hoped the attacker would join Juventus, who were on the verge of a total agreement before pulling the plug on a potential deal due to passport issues.

Asked whether he blamed himself at all for the situation which led to his departure from Barcelona, Suarez replied, ‘me or…’, before nodding in the Bartomeu’s direction of an awkward-looking Bartomeu.

The ex-Liverpool star added: ‘We have to be self-critical in the Champions League.

‘I have played with discomfort, with injuries but I do not blame myself for anything. I am proud.

‘It’s hard to accept leaving. But it’s reality and these things happen in football.’
