Newcastle United have made a surprise move for former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, asking Juventus about the availability of the midfielder.

The 30-year-old still has two years left on his contract in Turin but his future has been questioned after injuries have seen him struggle to make a regular impact in Italy.

The Welshman started just 13 Serie A games last season, which was actually up from the 11 he managed in his first campaign with Juventus.

Ramsey arrived on a free transfer from Arsenal, but his enormous £400,000-a-week wages are a drain on the club’s resources and his irregular appearances in the starting XI are very expensive.

Goal report that Newcastle have not made any sort of offer for Ramsey as yet, but have enquired over his availability this summer.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has made no secret of his desire to sign Arsenal’s Joe Willock on a permanent transfer this summer after his superb loan spell over the second half of last season, although that move does not seem close.

The Magpies have also been linked with a move for Chelsea’s Ross Barkley, with Bruce very keen to add a goal-scoring midfielder to his ranks.

Juventus have rehired Max Allegri as manager ahead of the new season and the Italian is plotting a new role for Ramsey, not sounding at all like he wants to let him go.

Juve have been linked with a move to re-sign Miralem Pjanic from Barcelona, with Ramsey perhaps going the other way, but Allegri is excited about Ramsey in a new, deeper role in midfield, which he has performed impressively in pre-season.

‘I don’t know about that. The club takes care of the transfer market, we talk every day,’ Allegri told Sport MediaSet after a win over Monza.

‘Ramsey played very, very well in front of the defence and I think in that role he can really become an important player.

‘I salute Mire [Pjanic], because we spent four years together with great victories. He is a Barcelona player now, we have talented players, and I think if Ramsey can be convinced to play in front of the defence, he can really do well there.

‘He already can see passing channels, has a good sense of the geometry of the field and can also rest on the ball more than he does up front.’
