Newcastle 'lodge £25m bid' for Duvan Zapata after hitting roadblock on first-choice target

It would be a big change for Zapata with Atalanta flying high in Italy, edging out the likes of Juventus and Roma to claim fourth spot at this stage of the season.

The Magpies, meanwhile, are still scrapping for every precious point, but the striker is still said to be keen on a Premier League switch if the two sides can agree on a fee.

The report claims, however, that Newcastle will only press ahead with the deal if they fail to lure in Benfica’s 22-year-old forward Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguay international is scoring at a rate of almost one goal per game out in Portugal, although co-owner Amanda Staveley may be put off by the club’s astronomical £50m valuation.
