Newcastle have seen an offer in the region of £30million accepted by Lyon for Brazilian international midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. The 24-year-old, who had also been attracting interest from Arsenal and Juventus, is currently away in South America on international duty but the Magpies are now putting plans in place for the player to undergo a medical.
Newcastle are yet to agree personal terms with Guimaraes but that is unlikely to prove an obstacle as they look to secure their third January signing.
The Magpies haven’t had much luck so far this month in their pursuit of new recruits despite already landing Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood from Atletico Madrid and Burnley, respectively.
Eddie Howe is still hopeful of signing at least two more defenders and another forward to bolster his side’s chances of Premier League survival.
However, in combative, defensive midfielder Guimaraes they are landing one of the finest players of his ilk.
The former Athletico Paranaense man has three senior caps for the Selecao to his name having previously represented their U23 side.
Guimaraes only arrived in Europe two years ago back in January 2020 for a fee in the region of £16.7m.
Express Sport understands Brazilian club Paranaense have secured a 20 percent sell-on clause for their former player, meaning they will be entitled to a cut of the fee Lyon receive from Newcastle.
