New Year Honours for business figures



A ports company Chair, a former Auditor General and a master whisky blender are among those recognised for their achievements in New Year Honours List.

Peel Ports chairman Tom Allison was awarded a CBE for services to business and charity.

Allison, who is the former chief executive of Clydeport is also the chairman of housebuilder Tulloch Homes and is senior independent director of Celtic Football Club.

His charity work includes him being an ambassador for the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Glasgow.

Allison, who lives in Stirling, is also a non-executive director of ship repairer Cammell Laird, Atlantic and Peninsula Marine Services and Ardnablane Investments and other Peel Ports companies.

Caroline Gardner, the former Auditor General for Scotland, was also awarded a CBE for services to the public sector in Scotland.

Judith Halkerston, who is Chair of software company Symphonic was awarded an OBE for services to the digital economy.

A non-executive director of a number of companies, Halkerston was previously a vice president of BT and managing director of the energy, telecom and utilities business of Logica and a former managing director of Xansa for whom she worked in the UK,, Europe, US and India.

Richard Paterson, master blender at whisky distiller Whyte & Mackay was awarded an OBE for services to the Scotch whisky industry.

Known as Richard ‘The Nose’ Paterson, he was previously awarded a lifetime achievement award at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London.

Alan and Linda Stewart, founders of the Rainbow Room International chain were also awarded for services to hairdressing.

Charandeep Singh, who is the deputy chief executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce was awarded a BEM for services to charity during the response to the Covid-19 pandemic. He is the founder of The Sikh Food Bank, set up at the start of the first lockdown.
