New Splatoon 3 trailer shows off story campaign and furry tentacles

Nintendo has shown off not just crab robots and grappling hooks for Splatoon 3’s multiplayer but a first look at its single-player mode.

Although a sizeable hit in the West it’s hard to overstate just how popular Splatoon is in Japan, which means that for Japanese fans the new trailer for Splatoon 3 will have been one of the most important reveals of Thursday’s Nintendo Direct.

The game still doesn’t have a release date more specific than sometime next year, but the new trailer did feature a look at the story campaign, which is titled Return of the Mammalians.

In the surprisingly bleak backstory of Splatoon the whole human race has gone extinct, and so too have all other mammals – except for two cats that were cryogenically frozen. Although in the trailer Judd (the big one) seems to have gone missing.

What exactly is happening story-wise is hard to tell but the tentacle monsters seem to have fur on their backs so, have they kidnapped Judd to steal his fur… or something?

According to the Nintendo website the setting of the story mode is called Alterna and the goop at the end of the trailer is ‘Fuzzy Ooze’, and if an Inkling falls into it then they lose control of their body and sprout fur.

To combat the ooze the main character has a Smallfry assistant that can eat up the goop and help in combat and solving puzzles.

It also seems like that the ooze will, in some form, become part of the multiplayer, although that doesn’t seem to be confirmed so far.

What was shown of the multiplayer is a number of new abilities and weapons, including cool looking crab robot tanks that you can ride and the ability to transform into a ninja like ‘Zipcaster’ with a grappling hook arm.

The main gameplay mode is still a 4v4 deathmatch but we’re sure there’ll be more beyond that, and hopefully a new version of the excellent Salmon Run co-op mode from Splatoon 2.
