New PS5 Stealth Assassins ninja game planned by original Tenchu developer

The makers of PS1 classic Tenchu: Stealth Assassins wants to make a spiritual sequel for the new generation of consoles.

Although Metal Gear Solid is widely recognised as popularising the concept of modern stealth games, Tenchu: Stealth Assassins was released six months earlier in Japan and for a time was just as influential.

The series struggled to take advantage of that early success though and none of the sequels were as warmly received, with no new entry since Tenchu: Shadow Assassins in 2008.

Original developer Acquire has worked on a number of the sequels, and spiritual successor Shinobido, and now president Takuma Endo has spoken of his desire to work on a new game – although it’ll have to be another unofficial follow-up.

FromSoftware currently own the rights to the series, which is odd as the recent Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice owes a lot to the franchise and yet has no direct connection.

That means Acquire can’t call their new game Tenchu but they have been able to trademark the name Stealth Assassin, with the implication being that will be the name of the new game.

‘I would like to make a stealth ninja game from the ground up for the PlayStation 5 generation’, Endo told Famitsu, as translated by Gematsu.

‘To lay the groundwork for that, we acquired this trademark, which is the game’s subtitle overseas.’

In the same interview Endo also spoke of setting up an indie brand by the end of the year, something that is still rare for established Japanese companies to be involved with directly.
