Always fancied yourself as a landlord?

Well, one of the world’s most northerly bars – located in the Arctic North between Norway and the North Pole – is looking for a new owner.

The pub, called Svalbar, is also a regular pitstop for polar bears. It’s currently up for sale and is expected to sell for a million euros (around £900,000).

The new owner will need to keep both human and bear spirits high while the Northern Lights swirl through the long winter nights – with darkness lasting for more than 100 days in Arctic winter.

Anyone looking to take over the institution must like excitement and have an adventurous spirit, according to current owner John-Einar Lockert.

He said: ‘It is an exciting place to run a bar and we have a flourishing night-life and culture scene.’

They also must be prepared for the polar bear visitors.

John-Einar added:‘The polar bear came to the bar last year, during the night. He walked past the bar and looked in the window.

‘It was a cold night and he was probably looking for a warm place to have something to eat. He could smell the food. It was lucky that we were closed.

‘Everyone is welcome in the bar, but the polar bears must stay outside.’

Other nearby wildlife include herds, arctic foxes, sea birds, arctic geese and walruses.

While part of the Kingdom of Norway, Svalbard has its own government and has tax-free status. As a result of no taxes, a glass of beer costs 50 Norwegian Kroner (£4.25) about a third of the price of a bar in Oslo (Norway’s capital).

Naturally, the pub is a favourite with both tourists and locals – so the new owner will have plenty of punters.
