New Marriott hotel by the SEC creates 45 jobs

Hotel Co. 51 has opened Glasgow’s Courtyard SEC by Marriott for business, creating 45 jobs.

The second Courtyard to open in Glasgow sits on the banks of the River Clyde, adjacent to the OVO Hydro.

It has 216 bedrooms, along with five meeting, conference and event spaces – holding up to 100 delegates on the first floor – as well as a 24-hour fitness centre.

General manager Ross Saunders, who is originally from Glasgow, has moved from the Moxy at Merchant City to open the Courtyard.

“It’s just over 36 years ago to the day that the first Courtyard Marriott opened for business travellers – I’m proud to be launching this stunning new hotel at the SEC but also within striking distance of the thriving bars and restaurants in Finnieston,” he stated.

The four-star hotel already welcomed guests from over 200 countries that attended the COP26 summit and has its own commitment to climate change. Built using energy efficient construction, the hotel has mobile room keys and a no plastic policy in place for the bar, committing to glass and compostable paper cups.

Donovan Sumner, regional director of operations for the UK for operating company Hotel Co. 51, added: “This is our 14th hotel opening in the UK and first Courtyard Marriott.

“Thanks to the location of the hotel, we were full for the climate change summit and will continue to build on that as one of the key hotels in the city for travellers and delegates attending events in the area.”

Earlier this month, Moxy Hotels, Marriott International’s experiential hotel brand, opened the Moxy Glasgow SEC.

The new Moxy hotel has 243 bedrooms and décor with a nod to the many events that will happen on its doorstep.

The second Moxy hotel to open in Scotland’s largest city, following the opening of Moxy Glasgow Merchant City, also features several small meeting rooms and a 24-hour gym.

“COP26 was our first piece of business and the hotel was full for the duration,” said David Steele, the hotel’s general manager. “It’s been a challenging year for the hospitality industry, but to open and have every bedroom full for the conference was a great way to kick off this fabulous new hotel.”
