On Wednesday, Nov. 24, FIBA announced the new dates for the 2022 edition of their continental cup in Asia.

The Asia Cup was originally scheduled to be held in Indonesia in August of 2021 but was rescheduled in July earlier this year following a meeting including the FIBA along with its regional office in Asia as well as key stakeholders and partners.

What are the new dates for FIBA Asia Cup 2022?

After the aforementioned meeting, the FIBA Asia Cup was postponed to 2022 in the window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asia Qualifiers but no clear dates were mentioned.

Now, those dates have been announced. The FIBA Asia Cup 2022 will be held between Jul. 12-24.

Who is the host nation for the FIBA Asia Cup 2022?

Indonesia will host the FIBA Asia Cup 2022 in Jakarta. This is the second time overall and the first time the South-East Asian nation is hosting the continental tournament since 1993.

As hosts, the nation was the first to book its spot.

Who are the participants in the FIBA Asia Cup 2022?

Following Indonesia, 12 more teams – the top two nations from each of the six groups – booked their place in the tournament after the first-ever FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

An additional three in Chinese Taipei, India, and Saudi Arabia booked their place through the Qualifying Tournament, which was held this past August between all the third-placed nations.

Therefore, the 16 teams that will participate in the FIBA Asia Cup 2022 are defending Champions Australia, Bahrain, China, Chinese Taipei, India, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Lebanon, New Zealand, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and hosts Indonesia.

Of the 29 previous editions of the Asia Cup conducted, China has clinched the gold medal in 16 of them.

What is the competition system for FIBA Asia Cup 2022?

The 16 teams will be slotted into four groups of four. Following the group games, the top nation from each group directly qualifies to the quarterfinals while the second and third-placed nations will compete for the four remaining spots.

Along with the announcement of the tournament’s new dates, also released was the date for the event’s draw ceremony – Dec. 8, 2021.
