New 2019 Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 teased

Mercedes-AMG has been developing two hot versions of the recently-launched CLA saloon, tasked with rivalling the Audi S3 and RS 3. We’ve already spied both the entry-level AMG CLA 35 and full-fat AMG CLA 45, and now Mercedes has given us our first official glimpse of the former, with this none too revealing teaser image.

Based on the same underpinnings as the A-Class hatch and saloon, the CLA 35 offers swoopy coupe styling at the expense of practicality. The usual range of AMG panels also feature, including a redesigned front bumper with larger intakes, a deeper rear bumper with a new diffuser and, as shown by Mercedes’ teaser image, a large boot-lid mounted lip spoiler.

New Mercedes-AMG A 45: everything you need to know

Naturally, the more powerful AMG CLA 45 will sport wilder bodywork. The model snapped by our spy photographers, (singled out by the yellow paint poking through its camouflage), features more aggressive bumpers front and rear, wider wheel arches and four exhaust tips in place of the CLA 35’s two.

Mechanically, the pair will be similar to their A-Class counterparts. That means the CLA 35 will likely be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine sending 302bhp and 400Nm of torque to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

Power figures for the A 45, (and therefore its CLA 45 counterpart), were recently leaked via a German car insurance website. It’ll be offered in two power outputs, with the standard version offering 382bhp and a more potent ‘S’ version offering 416bhp. It’ll likely achieve these figures with the assistance of Mercedes’ EQ Boost hybrid system.

The recently-announced Mercedes-AMG A 35 saloon claims a 0–62mph sprint of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 155mph; figures which we expect the CLA 35 will match. Meanwhile, the outgoing AMG CLA 45 accelerated from 0–62mph in 4.2 seconds with 376bhp on top, so we expect the new version will dip below the four second mark.

The new Mercedes-AMG A 35 is priced from £35,580. The previous generation CLA carried roughly a £4,000 premium over the equivalent A-Class, so expect the CLA 35 to kick off from close to £40,000. The CLA 45 will be pricier still, with an entry-point of £49,000 likely.
