NASA reveals ‘most powerful rocket’ which will take humans back to the Moon

NASA announced last year that it will return humans to the Moon by 2024, where they will establish a lunar colony. The mission will see them place humans back on the Moon for the first time since 1972. The space agency has decided it has unfinished business on our lunar satellite and wants to set up a permanent base on the Moon, with the missions hopefully taking place in 2024.

The base would be used as a checkpoint between Earth and Mars while also allowing astronauts to study the Moon in close detail.

Work on the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket is already underway, with NASA revealing a sneak peak of the “most powerful rocket we’ve ever built”.

An image released by the space agency shows the back of the huge rocket, dwarfing every person standing around it, even though it is lying vertically.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted: “Making progress! The massive @NASA_SLS core stage is moving to Building 110 at the Michoud Assembly Facility in Louisiana.

“There it will be readied for the Pegasus barge and its trip to @NASAStennis.”

The space agency said in a statement: “NASA’s powerful new rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), will send astronauts a quarter million miles from Earth to lunar orbit.

“The agency is committed to landing American astronauts, including the first woman and the next man, on the Moon by 2024.

“Through the agency’s Artemis lunar exploration program, we will use innovative new technologies and systems to explore more of the Moon than ever before.”

NASA will launch the Mars 2020 rover this year, which will explore the Red Planet as preparation for humanity’s arrival, which could happen in the next decade.

NASA said: “NASA’s latest mission to Mars – a mission that will receive a new name before launch – will be the latest rover to head to the Red Planet, but it’s not going alone.

“To aid it in its exploration, it’s carrying the first helicopter that will fly on another planet.”
