'My husband's friend refuses to call my son by his name – so he's banned from my house'

A lot of time and talk goes into picking the perfect name for your child, so if someone comes along and is rude about your choice and goes as far as to give the little one a new name, it can be very upsetting.

This is the situation one mum claims to have found herself in recently after an awkward incident with her husband’s best friend.

The unnamed parent took to Reddit to share her story, explaining how her partner’s friend is like his brother and he has a lot of opinions on their life.

He especially has a lot of thoughts on their parenting and their choice of baby name.

According to the post, the 30-year-old man doesn’t like the name they’ve picked and refuses to call the kid that, instead using the name Thomas as he thinks it sounds ‘cooler’.

The post on Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum, says: “My husband has a friend from college who he calls brother, they’re inseparable. They hang out together a lot and are very close.

“His friend tends to act rudely sometimes, he’s stubborn and thinks he’s some sense of humour. I tolerate his behaviour since it’s not that weird but things got worse when I got pregnant. He started calling my unborn son Thomas even though we told him I picked my grandfather’s name for my son. He kept doing it even after my son was born.

“Not only that but he’d post pictures of my son on Facebook and type ‘Tommy’ instead of my son’s original name which got people confused.

“I talked to my husband and then explained to his friend that he should stop calling my son Thomas but he kept doing it, even more, he even came up with more nicknames besides the name itself. It all came to head last night when my husband’s friend visited us while my family was visiting. Once he walked in he repeatedly started calling my son Thomas. Everyone was confused, I felt awful, I angrily corrected him in front of everyone and told him my son’s name is not Thomas.”

She continued to say that he would keep calling the kid Thomas as he liked it better which hurt her family as the child’s actual name was the grandfather’s name.

“I told him to stop calling him that and he said he can call him Thomas while we call him whatever no problem. I got mad and told him he’s no longer welcome to our house until he learns to call my son by his real name and stop this disrespect.

“My husband’s friend argued with me then left. It was awkward my husband said his friend wants to use this name and we should just accept it but I humiliated and embarrassed his friend by berating him in front of my family then kicked him out. He went on about him being our son’s uncle and I should respect that. I stood my ground and told him his friend isn’t welcome or even allowed to see our son unless he agrees to call him with his name.

“This upset my husband and he’s now saying his friend isn’t speaking to him and I might’ve ruined their 10 years of friendship with what I did. He added that I should stop trying to control what comes out of other people’s mouths and respect their opinions just like I should respect that his friend thinks the name my son has is ‘stupid’.”

The mum edited the post to later add that the friend had “felt strongly” about the name before the child was even born, “nagging” them to change it while she was pregnant.

More than 2,000 people have since responded to the post, with many agreeing that the mum is not in the wrong and that her husband should have been more supportive.

One person replied: “NTA but your husband sure is. Why does he allow this guy to trample all over your very reasonable wishes about your child’s name? Why do I suspect your husband wanted to use the name Thomas too?”

Another said: “I’m so sorry. Of course, this friend is a real piece of s***. But the most worrying thing is your husband because you don’t have his support. This friend disrespects you, disrespects the name you both chose.”

A third added: “If one of my friends stepped into my house, disrespected not only my wife, not only my son, but also a late family member, and did it in front of the rest of the family? I wouldn’t be mad at my wife, not at all, unless she didn’t kick his sorry a** out – assuming I wasn’t right there to do it myself! The sheer gall of it all is so out there to me. I couldn’t even imagine.

“I have friends I’ve known for over half my life. Not only would they never be so stubbornly rude and dumb, they know it wouldn’t stand up well with me, to begin with even if they wanted to be. This guy has to get his priorities straight.”
