Saving money is a popular resolution but with weeks to go until payday, it’s easy to give up quickly and dip into the money you’ve set aside.

But one mum has a simple way to keep saving a little when she can – using Smarties tubes.

Aimee Dobson shared her idea on the group Parents United, let’s do this together! Support, Ideas & Inspiration Hub, which she set up back in March.

Posting a picture, she showed how £2 coins are the perfect size to sit snuggly in the tub so she can keep the tubes and every time she gets a £2 coin, she stores it for later.

She managed to squeeze 83 coins into the large 130g tube.

She said: ‘Did you or your kids get smarties tubes this Christmas……use to save £2 coins. They fit perfectly and one full tube = £166.’

It’s easy to keep the tube in your bag and add a coin every time you’re handed one in change.

As it’s just a little bit at a time, you hardly notice the money isn’t there.

If your kids have the smaller tubes, you could try a different amount and fill them up quicker.

Aimee later added: ‘These are the 130g tubes basically giant tube of smarties. You always used to be able to fill the standard size with 20p’s but I haven’t tried since they changed the packaging.’

Over 7,000 people have shared Aimee’s post and others were keen to try it out.

One said: ‘I can’t believe it fits 83 coins! I’ve just emptied one of the kids and handed it to my husband to fill up.’

Another added: ‘We got two. On this!’

‘What a good idea,’ someone else commented.
