Jose Mourinho hopes Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will be available this weekend after suffering a nasty gash when Josh Dasilva caught him with a horror challenge.
Moussa Sissoko and Heung-Min Son scored the goals that broke down Brentford’s brave resistance and earned Mourinho’s side a place in the April 25 showpiece.
But things turned ugly when Brentford’s Dasilva was sent off after 84 minutes for an X-rated challenge on Hojbjerg.
As Hojbjerg closed down Dasilva, the Brentford midfielder lost control of the ball and caught his opponent on the shin, leaving him bleeding from a painful-looking gash.
Referee Mike Dean gave Dasilva a straight red card after checking the incident on his VAR screen.
And as a replay was shown on the big screen at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, gasps were heard coming from the home dugout, with Mourinho heard to shout: “You’re a disgrace.”
After the match, the Spurs boss was more conciliatory as he gave an update on Hojbjerg’s condition.
“It was for sure a bad tackle because he is bleeding a lot and the shin pad is broken,” said Mourinho.
“That is football. Dasilva is a young guy and a good player so in the heat of the game there is nothing to be critical of.
“Mike Dean made the decision on VAR so everything is fine and correct.”
Mourinho replaced Hojbjerg with Japhet Tanganga for the final few minutes, despite the midfielder’s protests that he wanted to play on.
And the manager is optimistic the 25-year-old will be able to play in Sunday’s FA Cup third-round tie away to Marine.
Mourinho said: “Pierre has a big cut but he didn’t even want me to play Tanganga in the last five minutes so I believe he can be okay for the weekend.”
Brentford boss Thomas Frank and his coaching staff were at first livid when Dasilva was sent off over the incident.
But after the final whistle, Frank shook hands with Mourinho, apologised and did the same with a big bear hug for fellow Dane Hojbjerg.
Tottenham’s opponents in the final will be decided when United host City in the other semi-final at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, with the Manchester rivals both on form at the moment.
