Mourinho 'blocked' in pursuit of Man Utd star as Torres issues bold transfer vow

Manchester United’s season came to a close with Wednesday night’s Europa League final versus Villarreal – and attention now turns to their summer transfer business.

The Red Devils are expected to prioritise a new face on the wing and at centre-back, with Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Pau Torres – who featured for Villarreal in the final – two key targets.

One Old Trafford legend has encouraged his former side to complete the signing of Sancho, insisting the Three Lions star would solve a “problem” in attack.

Torres, meanwhile, spoke honestly about his future ahead of the final as he prepares for a busy summer of interest in his services.

There is also an update on Jose Mourinho’s plan to sign one of his former players from United, with the latest reports from Italy suggesting his hopes have received a blow.

Here is Thursday’s Manchester United transfer round-up.

Mourinho ‘blocked’ by Roma board

Jose Mourinho’s hopes of a reunion with Nemanja Matic are all but over after Roma chiefs decided against bidding for the Manchester United midfielder.

That’s according to TuttoMercatoWeb, which claims Matic’s demands for a €7million-per-year (£6.1m) contract were deemed too costly.

The news comes as a blow to Mourinho and Matic, who were believed to be keen to join forces at Stadio Olimpico as the former takes over as Roma manager this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was reportedly ready to sanction the transfer, with Matic, 32, valued at around €10million (£8.7m).

Torres makes declaration

Pau Torres issued a passionate update on his future ahead of Villarreal’s showdown with Manchester United in the Europa League final.

The 24-year-old Spanish international has emerged as one of the finest defenders in La Liga and is believed to be on the Red Devils’ centre-back shortlist.

But Torres, who has been on Villarreal’s books since he was a child, says his life is “linked” to his boyhood club.

“For now I only think as a player dressed in yellow, I see my life linked to this club,” he told the Pure Football podcast.

“For now I have a contract here [until June 2024] and I do not see beyond this final or what may come this summer.

“God willing I can be in the Euros. I only want the first title for my club, for my people, and then to represent Spain in a tournament as big as this.”

Sancho could remedy “problem”

Manchester United have been urged to address their weakness on the right wing by club legend Gary Pallister.

The Red Devils are understood to have rekindled their interest in Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho in recent weeks and Pallister claims the Englishman would “excite the United fans next season”.

“The side isn’t the finished article and hopefully, there will be additions, maybe Sancho because that right-hand side has been a problem for United all season,” the former centre-back told SBK Sportsbook.

“They’ve finished too far behind City in what has been a strange season.

“Sancho is exciting and had a great time in Germany scoring goals and getting assists. He looked as though he was going to come in last season but Dortmund played hardball and it didn’t get over the line.

“I think he’s eager to come. United have had (Mason) Greenwood playing out on the right because he’s not strong enough to play in the middle and then there’s Daniel James who I hope can progress and offer even more next season in a bid to keep the role, so somebody like Sancho would be great for competition and a real no-brainer.

“He’s the type of player that would excite the United fans next season.”
