Of these, the Crawley and Swindon branches opened just five years ago.

The news comes after the grocer was the worst-performing member of the big four supermarkets in the past three months, with sales down 2.7 per cent, according to Kantar data.

Last month, Morrisons’ market share stood at 10.1 per cent compared to fifth-placed Aldi’s 8.1 per cent.

Around the same time last year, Morrisons’ market share was 10.3 per cent while Aldi’s was much smaller at 6.7 per cent.

Your rights if you’re made redundant

IF you’re being made redundant, you may be eligible for the below, according to GOV.UK.

  • Redundancy pay: If you’ve been working for your current employer for at least two years, you’re usually entitled to a statutory redundancy pay.
  • A notice period: According to redundancy law, you’re entitled to a minimum notice period of 12 weeks’ if employed for 12 years or more, at least one week’s notice if you have been employed between one month and two years, or one week’s notice for each year if employed between two and 12 years. If your employer doesn’t want you to work your notice period they can offer you a lump sum instead.
  • A consultation with your employer: Employers always have to consult with employees before dismissing them on the grounds of redundancy. In short, your employer must tell you what’s going on and give you a chance to ask questions and raise objections.
  • The option to move into a different job: Your employer might offer you “suitable alternative employment” within your organisation or an associated company. Keep in mind that you may lose your right to statutory redundancy pay if you unreasonably turn it down.
  • Time off to find a new job: If you’ve been continuously employed for two years, you could be given a reasonable amount of time off to look for another job or to arrange training to help you find another job.

Morrisons said the decision to close branches was made after a review of the performance of its 494 stores.

It added that it’ll aim to reduce redundancies and redeploy staff where possible.

The supermarket couldn’t say when the shops will close as it’s just started a consultation process, which is expected to last for 45 days.

Morrisons is also planning to open four new stores in Bolsover, Canning Town, Folkestone and Oswestry in October and November this year, it told The Sun.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “As we continue to focus on building a broader, stronger Morrisons we are constantly reviewing opportunities for new stores and the performance of our existing estate.

“We are planning to invest in four new stores this year and are today, regrettably, proposing to close four.

“We will now be going through a consultation process at the stores and will be discussing how to reduce redundancies and, where possible, redeploy our highly valued colleagues within the business.”

Last year, Morrisons slashed around 1,500 shop floor jobs in a huge shake-up.

Then in January, it announced plans to hire 500 paid apprentices to work on it meat, fish and bakery counters.

Earlier this week, Morrisons sparked outrage by hiking cost of plastic bags to 30p each in third price increase this year.
