Mikel Arteta has already spoken to Martin Odegaard ahead of his move to Arsenal and has promised the Real Madrid midfielder that he will get a regular role in the team, according to reports in Spain.

The 22-year-old has expressed his desire to leave Real Madrid before the end of the January window as he has failed to force his way into Zinedine Zidane’s plans.

Odegaard has started just three games in La Liga this season and was surprisingly left out of the squad earlier this week as Madrid were beaten by Alcoyano in the Copa del Rey.

It’s understood that Arsenal have now reached an initial agreement to sign Odegaard on loan for the remainder of the season.

And according to Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, Arteta has held talks with Odegaard and promised the midfielder that he will be an ‘important player’ for the Gunners.

The report also claims that Arteta has indicated to Odegaard that he will be handed more chances at Arsenal than he has been getting under Zidane at Madrid.

The Norway international has now been left out of Madrid’s matchday squad for their La Liga fixture against Alaves on Saturday.

It was initially believed that Odegaard had favoured a return to Real Sociedad having thrived there on loan last season.

But speaking on Friday, Real Sociedad’s head coach, Imanol Alguacil, insisted that the club were not in the running to sign the midfielder for a second time.

‘At no time has there been an option for him to come back with us,’ said Alguacil.

‘If there had been, of course we would have discussed it at the club. There is nothing more to say.’

Arsenal are now expected to complete a deal for Odegaard, which would see him move to the Premier League for the remainder of the campaign.

As with their loan agreement for Dani Ceballos, Arsenal will not have a purchase option in their deal for Odegaard, with Madrid keen to assess the midfielder’s progress in the summer.

Ceballos has also reportedly spoken with Odegaard about his potential move to Arsenal this month.
