Mikel Arteta issues Liverpool and Man City demand of Arsenal stars for Man Utd clash

Mikel Arteta wants his Arsenal players to be more ruthless in front of goal than they were against Liverpool and Manchester City when they take on Manchester United on Sunday (4.30pm kick-off).

The Gunners are looking to bounce back from successive 1-0 defeats to Leicester and City having also slipped to a loss against Liverpool last month.

Three wins and three defeats leave the north London club 11th although they are only four points off of Everton and Liverpool, who share top spot on 13 points.

Arteta’s Arsenal have a wretched away record against the big six ahead of their trip to Old Trafford, having gone 28 games without a win.

Their last triumph came away at Manchester City in January 2015 and they are winless at United’s home ground since September 2006.

And as the Londoners look to make a statement in Manchester to continue United’s poor start to the top-flight campaign on home soil, Arteta wants his side to show a ruthless streak.

“I think it’s been 14 years since Arsenal have won a Premier League game at United and, after the defeat like we had against Leicester last week, I think it’s the prefect scenario to go there and try to do that,” the Spanish coach said.

“This is the challenge now. We’ve done it against some big teams already, now we have to do it in a consistent way.

“I’m not concerned about performances because, as you mentioned, you can see the trend and how we are evolving.

“It’s just those margins, how we manage the margins within the games and those game moments when we try to get wins and not lose those games.

“It was against Liverpool, we had two or three chances to do what they did, the same with Manchester City and the one against Leicester which was a different game because they approached the game in a really different way.

“But again, we will go to Old Trafford with the same mindset to go there and try to win the football match and improve.

“Every three or four days. We are in a process and hopefully we will be a more solid and ruthless team week in and week out.”

While the unpredictable nature of this season has seen even Liverpool and City suffer heavy defeats, despite having dominated the league in recent years, Arteta is unsure what to expect.

“We don’t know because obviously what we are facing is unprecedented,” he said.

“I think all the teams are going to be like that but if you look at the table this season compared to last season it is a completely different league for everybody.”

Although Arsenal are looking to improve in the final third having scored just eight goals in six league games, the Gunners are far tighter defensively under Arteta.

But he is aware of the need to find their form offensively if they are to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

“I think with the rest, we have come a long way, this is the next step,” the former midfielder said.

“We have to attack certain blocks in certain positions and with a certain number of players and we will get better at it.”
