Klopp previews Liverpool’s trip to cross-city rivals Everton

Michael Owen has backed Liverpool to edge out Everton in a hard-fought Merseyside derby encounter on Wednesday night.

The Anfield hero, 41, also tipped Premier League title rivals Chelsea to pick up three more points as they travel to Watford, although he does not think it will be plain sailing for Thomas Tuchel’s side.

The Blues lead Manchester City by one point at the table’s summit with 13 games played, while Liverpool are two points behind the leaders in third.

The west Londoners could only manage a 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Sunday, a welcome boost for Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s sides.

Liverpool have the vastly-superior form as they cross Stanley Park to take on Everton as their local rivals are without a win in over two months.

Everton won 2-0 at Anfield in February during a dire spell for Liverpool

The Reds picked up an emphatic 4-0 victory over Southampton last time out and Owen expects them to win 2-1 at Goodison Park in midweek as payback for their 2-0 defeat by the Toffees in February.

The former England striker told BetVictor : “The Merseyside derby returns with Liverpool aiming to get revenge after Everton’s triumph at Anfield earlier this year.

“That was in the middle of a bad period for the Reds, and now with (Virgil) Van Dijk back fit along with a return to top form from Trent Alexander-Arnold, this should be a lot tougher for the visitors.

“The Reds can’t stop scoring at the moment, and if Messrs. (Mohamed) Salah and (Sadio) Mane are in the mood, I think they’ll notch up another victory.”

Turning his attention to the clash at Vicarage Road, Owen predicted Chelsea would keep City and Liverpool at bay with a win, but he does not expect it will be routine work.

He added: “The Blues were held at home last time out against Man Utd, so will be all too aware of Manchester City and Liverpool breathing down their necks.

“Whilst the Hornets have improved under (manager Claudio) Ranieri, this is a whole different test. I don’t think there will be a lot in it, although I do expect the visitors to make the short trip home with all three points in the bag.”

Elsewhere, Owen backed Leicester City to win 2-1 at Southampton, Wolverhampton Wanderers to beat Burnley 1-0 at home and West Ham to reaffirm their top-four credentials with a 2-1 victory over Brighton.

He also tipped City to come out on top against Aston Villa, managed by former teammate Steven Gerrard, with a 3-1 win.
