Michael Owen urges Manchester United to sign Erling Haaland to mount Premier League title challenge

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen says the Red Devils should focus their efforts on signing Dortmund forward Erling Haaland ahead of other targets this summer.

Solskjaer has been given a modest budget of around £80million to spend this summer and the Norwegian is ready to sell up to four players to top-up his kitty.

United had planned on extending Edinson Cavani’s deal, which would effectively shelved the need to sign a centre-forward for an extra 12 months.

However, the Uruguyuan is said to be unhappy at Old Trafford and he’s now expected to leave at the end of the campaign, meaning Solskjaer must fast-forward his plans to sign a centre forward.

The Norwegian wants to sign a centre-back, a central midfielder and a right midfielder this summer but Owen believes the need for a centre forward is the greatest of all and he’s urged his former club to break the bank for Haaland.

Asked the one position he would strengthen this summer, Owen told Premier League Productions: ‘A top centre forward I think.

‘I would like to see pace alongside Harry Maguire because then I think it changes the whole dynamic. If they could start defending one vs one, two vs two than that changes the whole dynamic of a team. I don’t think they can do that. They tried to do that against Tottenham earlier in the season and basically they’ve been scared stiff of committing bodies forward since. They tend to be a bit more pragmatic, they never tend to beat teams four or five-nil.

‘But If i had one position though it would be a centre forward, right down the middle. There’s one on everyone’s lips at the minute which every team actually need. Haaland is the name in question and virtually every big team a the moment needs a centre forward. He is going to be hot property when and if he becomes available.’

The Norway striker has struck 47 goals in 48 games for Dortmund since joining from RB Salzburg less than 18 months ago.

A release clause of around £62m becomes active in Haaland’s contract in 2022 but Dortmund are expected to cash in this summer as they could receive close to double that on the open market.

United remain interested in Haaland’s team-mate, Jadon Sancho, and the Red Devils are hopeful that Dortmund will lower their £108m asking price from last summer given the German’s side’s struggles this term.

Dortmund are currently in fifth and outside the Champions League qualification places. Should they fail to finish in the top four, it is inevitable that they will sell some of their top talent.
