Manchester United take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup semi-finals and Michael Owen has backed his former side to get the better of their rivals.

Wednesday’s game at Old Trafford is a rematch of last season’s League Cup semi-final clash in which City won over two legs.

United will be out for revenge this time around as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer awaits his first major final as Red Devils boss.

His side lost in Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Europa League semi-finals last term, but come into this week’s game in top form.

United have moved level on points with league leaders Liverpool after winning eight of their last 10 Premier League games, meanwhile, City are just four points behind their local rivals with an extra match to play.

But despite City winning the competition for the last three consecutive seasons, Owen feels United will win the one-legged clash 2-1.

‘Both Manchester sides are in excellent form ahead of this semi-final clash,’ the ex-Red Devils striker told BetVictor.

Manchester City have been steadily improving week-on-week and their progress continued at the weekend, playing some of their best stuff when defeating Chelsea 3-1.

‘Having climbed to 2nd position in the Premier League, Manchester United come into this undefeated in their last 7 matches. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is aiming for silverware, however, for that to happen his side must end City’s recent dominance in this competition.

‘Interestingly, City have failed to score in their last 4 visits to Old Trafford. United should line up with the same side that defeated Aston Villa at the weekend with Dean Henderson the only exception in goal.

‘With both sides in such good form, it’s no doubt going to be a tight match. That said, Manchester United have tremendous momentum. I think they’ll have just enough against a City side who may be slightly understrength on the night.’

United or City will take on the winners of the other semi-final between Tottenham and Brentford on Tuesday.

Jose Mourinho has won the competition three times and Owen believes the Portuguese boss will reach another final with a 3-1 win for Spurs against the Bees at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

‘EFL Cup giant-killers, Brentford look to continue their fantastic cup run against a Spurs side that are desperate to land some silverware,’ Owen added.

‘For the Bees, it’s no doubt their biggest challenge in the competition to date, but one I’m sure the players will be relishing.

‘We all know that Jose Mourinho holds the EFL Cup in high regard. With that in mind, I’m in no doubt that Tottenham will line up here with a full strength side.

‘Brentford have defeated Newcastle, Fulham, West Brom and Southampton en route to the semis. However, with the quality in the Tottenham ranks, I can only see the Premier League [side] progressing in what should be an enjoyable encounter.’
