Mesut Ozil facing permanent Arsenal squad axe as Mikel Arteta must leave out two players

Mesut Ozil is the most high-profile Arsenal player in danger of losing his place in the squad with Mikel Arteta having to omit two first-team players following a mixed end to the transfer window.

Although the Gunners pulled off the deadline-day signing of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid, they were less successful with their outgoings and failed to offload a number of players they hoped to cash in on.

That has now created an issue whereby Arsenal have 19 non-homegrown players in their squad, but are only permitted to submit a maximum of 17 to the Premier League.

Arteta therefore has to pick two senior first-team players to leave out of the squad, with initial rumours swirling that summer signings Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares would be the duo who miss out.

However, Goal.com report that the decision has not been finalised and Ozil is also in the frame to be axed despite being the club’s highest earner on £350,000-a-week.

The German did not feature at all after the restart last season and did not even attend Wembley for the FA Cup final victory over Chelsea, though Arteta has always insisted that Ozil could win back his place in the squad.

Arsenal have to submit their Europa League squad today, which will give a good indication of who will miss out in the Premier League – with the deadline for the league extended until October 20.

There is still a domestic-only window open, allowing Premier League sides to buy, sell and loan to Football League clubs, though it seems highly unlikely that any of Arsenal’s fringe senior players would be willing to drop down to the Championship.

A centre-back will almost certainly be left out, with Arteta having an astonishing eight central defenders at his disposal.

Mari, Calum Chambers and Shkodran Mustafi have all missed the opening games of the season with injury and may pay the price and whatever decision Arteta makes, he will be unable to make changes to his squad again until January.
