Mercedes-AMG EQE: Performance version of electric executive saloon spotted testing …

The mid-size Mercedes EQE electric executive saloon car will follow its larger EQS sibling in spawning a range of high-performance Mercedes-AMG variants. Spy photos from June 2021 showed a prototype EQE testing in Germany with the trademark large AMG brake calipers visible beneath heavy camouflage, while the car appeared on public roads again in October 2021, wearing less camouflage this time.

It’s not known exactly how many AMG versions of the EQE there could be or what their power outputs would be, but Mercedes registered the ‘EQE 43’, ‘EQE 53’ and ‘EQE 63’ product names with the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in November 2020, suggesting a line-up to mirror the petrol-powered E-Class AMG cars is in the works.

That would tally with the larger Mercedes EQS: an AMG 53 version was revealed in September 2021, while EQS 53 and 63 guises could also follow, judging by Mercedes trademark applications. A maximum power output of over 750bhp is offered, and we could see similar from the range-topping AMG EQE.

High-performance electric models from established brands are set to become more common in the coming years as the big premium players seek to match the performance of the top-end Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model S in particular. We’ve already seen the Porsche Taycan, while a fully electric BMW 5 Series – potentially including an ultra-fast M5 version – is also in the works.
