Melania Trump's furious body double conspiracy rant as Donald offers explanation

It’s a crucial time in the US election campaign with just over a week to go until all votes and cast and the decision has been made.

Will Donald Trump be elected to serve a second term in the White House, or will his Democrat rival Joe Biden be victorious?

Both candidates are hittng the campaign trail as they try to sway undecided voters and maintain the supported of their existing supporters.

However, one thing has been keeping social media preoccupied this weekend – whether or not Melania Trump uses a body double for some events.

Images of the President and First Lady boarding Marine One at the White House sparked a social media frenzy as eagle-eyed  Twitter  users claimed the woman was not Mrs Trump.

In one image taken by a press photographer and circulated to news organisations, which we have used at the top of this story, Melania can be seen getting on board with her husband, wearing black sunglasses obscuring her face and smiling broadly.

A second, similar-looking image of her also wearing black sunglasses and smiling has also been circulating wildly on social media, sparking speculation that she was a decoy.

And this isn’t the first time the ‘fake’ Melania rumours have surfaced.

In 2019 Twitter exploded when a picture of the couple at a memorial for tornado victims in Alabama seemed to show Melania looking different to usual.

One person wrote on Twitter: “I see unconvincing Melania stunt-double is back.”

But the rumours date back even further, to 2017, when The Donald and his wife were pictured at a press conference and Melania’s face was partially obscured by huge, dark sunglasses.

And the latest images, which were taken last Thursday as the President and First Lady departed from the White House for Nashville, Tennessee, have sparked a fresh crop of conspiracy theories.

Some people on social media claimed Melania wasn’t smiling in the same way.

One Twitter user said: “The only thing I’ll miss from this administration is them swapping in new Melanias and just pretending we won’t notice like a 4-year-old with a guppy.

“I never believed the  #FakeMelania  conspiracies, but you can tell this 100% isn’t her, because she’s looking fondly at a Christmas tree in the distance.”

Another tweeted: “Has someone checked on the “real” Melania?”

Comedian Patton Oswalt posted: “That’s…SO not Melania. They didn’t even try.”

Both President Trump and the First Lady have addressed the body double conspiracy theories in the past – and claim it’s all down to ‘fake news journalists’.

Last year Trump tweeted, who no evidence to back it up: “The Fake News photoshopped pictures of Melania, then propelled conspiracy theories that it’s actually not her by my side in Alabama and other places.

“They are only getting more deranged with time!”

Then, when the bizarre conspiracy was raised on the US talk show, The View, Melania herself waded into the row.

Co-presenter Joy Behar said: “Some people think the first lady is using an impostor to stand in for her. You mean there are two women who have to pretend they’re listening to (President Trump)?”

Following the segment the First Lady’s representative, Stephanie Grisham, wrote an email to the network ABC.

She blasted it was “sad” female hosts “spend so much time attacking another woman, whose only goal is to help children”.
