Mauricio Pochettino tells Paris Saint-Germain he wants to leave with Tottenham and Real Madrid interested

Mauricio Pochettino has told Paris Saint-Germain officials that he wants to terminate his contract at the club this summer, according to reports.

The ex-Tottenham boss only joined the French outfit in January of this year to replace Thomas Tuchel but failed to steer them to the Ligue 1 title as they were pipped to the post by Lille.

Although Pochettino did manage to guide PSG to Coupe de France and Trophee des Champions victories, they also crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Manchester City in the semis.

The Argentine’s contract isn’t due to expire until the summer of 2022, however, according to Goal, he has informed the club that he wants to depart a year early.

PSG were planning on sticking with Pochettino, and the report claims that the 49-year-old will accept whatever decision sporting director Leonardo makes.

Pochettino is said to maintain a ‘special affection’ for PSG and would continue in his post until the end of his deal should that be what the club desire.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are said to be keen on bringing the Argentine back to north London, which would come as a shock given that they only relieved him of his duties in November 2019.

But after the sacking of Jose Mourinho in April, Spurs are said to be willing to offer Pochettino a long-term deal to return.

However, they will face competition from Real Madrid, who are also in search of a new manager following Zinedine Zidane’s decision to step down from his role as Madrid boss – for a second time – earlier this week.

The Spanish giants have identified Pochettino as their top target to replace Zidane on a wishlist that also includes Antonio Conte and Raul.

In terms of Pochettino completing a dramatic return to Spurs, club legend Glenn Hoddle isn’t convinced.

‘It’s such a difficult one,’ Hoddle told the Keys & Gray podcast.

‘Pochettino is a great guy, I met him on a few occasions with Ossie [Ardiles], he’s a really good football man, good at his job.

‘When he went off to Paris Saint-Germain, I thought, ‘Now he is going to get his success, now he is going to get some silverware’, and he hasn’t.

‘Sometimes people are destined not to be successful.

‘They are very good at their jobs and excellent coaches, but other people you think, ‘Oh, they’ve had some luck’, and they get their rewards that way.

‘For Daniel Levy to turn round and say, ‘I’m taking Poch back, I made a mistake, it was my fault…’ it doesn’t sound like Daniel.

‘That would be a big call, a massive call.’
