Matteo Guendouzi has responded to Mesut Ozil’s words of praise by describing his fellow Arsenal outcast as the best player he has ever played with.

Guendouzi was farmed out on loan to Hertha Berlin during the summer following several breaches of discipline, culminating in an unseemly altercation with Brighton’s Neal Maupey during a contentious defeat at the Amex last season.

During a rare Q&A session on Twitter Ozil, who has also fallen foul of Mikel Arteta’s ‘non-negotiables’, described the France international as ‘underrated’ and Guendouzi has subsequently returned the compliment.

He said: ‘Thank you my bro @MesutOzil1088. You know how much these words are important for me especially from you, one of the best players in the world and the best I played with.’

Without the exiled duo, Arsenal have struggled badly this season and head into Boxing Day’s London derby against Chelsea just four points adrift of the relegation zone having failed to win in the Premier League since November 1.

‘Things have to turn around,’ said Arteta following Tuesday’s 4-1 defeat against Manchester City. ‘This is a crucial moment for us in the season and we have to do it this week.

‘Obviously the two goals that we conceded [against Manchester City] put the game into a really difficult situation.

‘The first one was a really soft one really early in the game. That obviously gives us the worst possible scenario in the situation we are in, a real test.

‘I’m really feeling for the players, and obviously for our fans because something is happening every game for different reasons. But we need results.’
