Arsenal on the verge of landing French youth international Matteo Guendouzi.

The Lorient midfielder is reportedly poised to join the Gunners on a five-year contract after an initial £7million fee was agreed.

He will become Arsenal’s fourth summer signing if he passes his medical, which is due to take place in London on Monday.

Guendouzi will follow Bernd Leno, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Sokratis Papastathopoulos into the club this summer, with Uruguay international Lucas Torreira set to follow.

Who is Matteo Guendouzi?

Guendouzi is a defensive midfielder who currently plays his football for Ligue 2 side Lorient.

The 19-year-old started his youth career with Paris Saint-Germain and moved to Lorient in 2014 from the current Ligue 1 champions.

Having made his debut for the B side during the 2015-16 season, Guendouzi made his debut as a substitute for the first team in their 2-1 home defeat against Nantes in October 2016.

With a further eight appearances to his name that campaign, the midfielder played in 20 games in all competitions for his side last year as they finished 7th in Ligue 2.

Guendouzi has represented his country at U18, U19 and U20 level.

Who wants him?

The midfielder has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past given his performances for Lorient in France.

Spurs were linked with a move for the player during the January transfer window, while Manchester City were also believed to be keen on a move for the youngster.

Although a move didn’t materialise at the start of the year, it looks like Guendouzi could be plying his trade in the top flight come August.

According to reports from France, the Frenchman is set to sign a five-year deal with Arsenal after both clubs agreed on an €8m deal for the player.

It is also believed that Guendouzi will undergo his medical on Monday.

How much is he worth?

Lorient are believed to want around €9m for their player amid interest from Premier League sides.

The French club received an offer of €5m for Guendouzi back in January, although that was knocked back immediately.

The player is contracted at Lorient until the end of next season and has so far refused to extend his stay with the club.

He is one of the most highly-rated midfielders in France

How did he do last season?

Guendouzi did very well for Lorient last season when he played following their relegation from Ligue 1 in 2016/17.

After making a handful of appearances for his side in the French top flight, the midfielder played on a regular basis for his side last term, including 17 appearances in Ligue 2.

However, he soon found himself out of the team with many believing his absence was down to the fact that he would not sign a new contract at the club.

Seen as one of the best upcoming talents in French football, the midfielder has earned comparisons with PSG star Adrien Rabiot.

Yet to find the net for Lorient, Guendouzi is known for his role in front of defence and breaking play up.
