Matt Preston shares bittersweet MasterChef throw back photo

Matt Preston shares bittersweet flashback photo to the early days of MasterChef as George Calombaris continues to struggle financially after rebranding four of his restaurants

It was announced in July MasterChef judges Matt Preston, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan would not return to the successful cooking show.

And on Thursday, Matt shared a bittersweet ‘flashback Friday’ photo from 11 years ago of the trio and host of the cooking competition’s first season, Sarah Wilson.

Taking to Instagram, the  57-year-old food critic paid homage to each person he worked alongside.

‘It was 11 years ago that the four of us started out on an epic odyssey together and, like the best mythologies,’ he started off the lengthy post.

‘One of us – i’m looking at you @_sarahwilson_ went off to help make the world a far better place as an internationally best-selling author while @garymehigan got much better hair, @gcalombaris shrunk, and i got a much needed hair cut (but compensated by growing a beard).’

He added: ‘I love you all guys – for the memories and for the future.’

Matt is set to return to TV alongside Gary, 52, in 2020 for Plate Of Origin.

Joining the pair on the upcoming cooking show is My Kitchen Rules judge Manu Feildel, 45.

While his two close mates have moved on to bigger and better things, George, 41, has been struggling since he was forced to pay back $7.8million to 500 staff after underpaying them for a number of years.

In the last six months he has rebranded four of his popular restaurants.

This week he announced the closure of Brunswick East branch of Melbourne restaurant Hellenic Republic.

It leaves him with just three of his Greek restaurants left standing.

Despite removing his name from the restaurants, which are led by new star chefs, they are still owned by his multi-million dollar MAdE Establishment empire.
