Martin Keown hailed ‘predator’ Edinson Cavani after he scored to help Manchester United beat Fulham and return to the top of the Premier League.

The Uruguay legend was on hand to take advantage of a blunder from Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola and equalise for United at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.

Manchester United fell behind after just six minutes as Fulham’s Ademola Lookman scored but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side completed the comeback and clinched the three points when Paul Pogba scored a superb goal in the second half.

The victory sees Solskjaer’s side move back above Leicester City into first place and Keown reserved special praise for Cavani after the win.

The former Arsenal and England defender told Match of the Day: ‘He [Cavani] is a real predator who has been prolific throughout Europe.

‘Today he was really important, it’s his link-up play, his overall play, he must be a nightmare to play against.

‘I didn’t have the pleasure to play against him but he’s a big player for them, a top player. He just waits for his chance and then smashes it in, brilliant.

‘He’s a provider too and he works for the team. He wants to close people down, he still puts a shift in at 33. He’s outstanding in that area.’

Ex-Manchester City defender Micah Richards, meanwhile, added: ‘I played against him and he ran me ragged.

‘You can’t teach that, he’s a natural born goalscorer, he’s so intelligent.’

Discussing Manchester United’s win at Fulham, Red Devils boss Solskjaer told BT Sport: ‘I think we started slow but after their goal I felt we played well. We needed to wake up and after that we played really well.

‘We don’t do offsides really, we should follow the run. We had not woken up but good reaction.

‘Fantastic goal by Paul and we had some other chances to finish the game but of course when it is just one goal and the players they put on it is going to be like heart in your mouth.

‘He [Paul Pogba] has really come on. He is fit, he can play in midfield and he can play wide.

‘That is key with Paul, getting him match fit and running fit and he is at the moment. He played very well.’
