Marks and Spencer ‘to cut hundreds of jobs this week with thousands more redundancies planned

MARKS & SPENCER reportedly plans to axe hundreds of job in the coming week in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The iconic retailer is joining the likes of the John Lewis Partnership, Boots, and Debenhams as more Brits shop online because of Covid-19.

Sky News reports that M&S will begin announcing redundancy plans within days.

About 250,000 High Street jobs could be axed as more Brits shop online in the coronavirus crisis.

John Lewis is shutting eight stores putting 1,300 jobs at risk, while Boots this week said 4,000 will be going.

Sources told Sky News that several thousand jobs were expected to be lost as chief executive Steve Rowe ramps up an ongoing restructuring of the business.

It will be the latest chain to have taken taxpayers’ money through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, but only to subsequently announce significant numbers of redundancies.

About 27,000 M&S employees — out of a total of 78,000 — were furloughed under a programme to save jobs.

An M&S spokesperson said: “We don’t comment on speculation and, if and when we have an announcement to make, our colleagues will be the first to know.”
