Mark Schwarzer fires warning to Timo Werner over Chelsea role

Mark Schwarzer has warned Timo Werner he could face the axe when Chelsea have a fully fit squad.

The former Chelsea goalkeeper feels the Germany international will be under pressure to continue being a regular starter in Frank Lampard’s XI amid his struggles in front of goal.

Werner has failed to find the net in each of his last nine appearances for his club and has proven wasteful in front of goal in recent weeks.

He has only scored four goals in 14 Premier League starts but, unlike others in Lampard’s team, hasn’t found himself outside the starting XI.

But Schwarzer thinks he will be lucky to keep his place in the team when everyone else is fit.

‘If he’s contributing by doing a lot of work in the game, helping the team be successful, getting in the right areas, helping with assists, then I can understand why he stuck with him,’ Schwarzer told Stadium Astro.

‘Don’t forget as well that Frank has had to balance some injuries – whether it is [Christian] Pulisic, [Hakim] Ziyech in and out of the side.

‘If we had a fully fit Pulisic and Ziyech, it may be a different situation for Timo Werner. He may find himself on the outside.

‘I think it is only a matter of time. Add [Callum] Hudson-Odoi to that mix, he has struggled with injuries.

‘Timo Werner is the only one out of those four that has been fit all the time.’
